Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
